A young entrepreneur named Fred DeLuca started up a fast food restaurant with his friend Peter Buck so he could fund his way through medical school. What began as a humble, short-fix venture soon turned into a nationwide franchise that spawned a whole fast food revolution. By 1974, the duo owned 16 submarine sandwich shops in Connecticut. They hit on the idea to start franchising, which enabled the brand to grow exponentially not only across the whole of America, but eventually the whole world.
